Founders L.S. "Sam" Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, were inspired to create U-Haul after trying unsuccessfully to rent a one-way trailer for their move from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon. The couple immediately identified an unserved market need, certain that many families in their situation would benefit from short-term trailer rentals for moves.
And so, U-Haul was born in the summer of 1945. Today, U-Haul boasts the largest rental fleet in the DIY moving industry. Its fleet includes trucks, cargo vans, pickups, cargo trailers and utility trailers.
In addition to moving in-town and one-way truck and trailer rentals, U-Haul offers self-storage solutions, including climate-controlled storage, vehicle storage and drive-up storage, as well as portable moving containers.
U-Haul sells and rents a huge variety of moving supplies, including moving boxes, covers and bags, dollies, packing tape, locks, and ropes and tie-downs. It also sells accessories like bike racks and hitches. You can pick up your order in-store or get free standard shipping on all orders over $100.

Are there U-Haul gift cards or certificates?
U-Haul gift certificates are available on virtually any U-Haul product, including truck and trailer rentals, self-storage, moving supplies and even moving labor. Gift certificates can be purchased in amounts between $5 and $1,000, available for purchase on UHaul.com.
Does U-Haul have protection packages?
U-Haul offers several different damage protection packages: Safemove: This basic package covers most accident damage to rental equipment, cargo protection from collision, fire, and windstorms and medical protection for you and your passengers. Safemove Plus: This premium package covers everything included in the Safemove package, in addition to overhead damage and tire protection, plus $1 million in supplemental liability coverage. Safetow: This trailer-focused package covers damage to the U-Haul rental trailer or towing device as well as your vehicle and cargo. It also includes medical protection for you and your passengers. Safetrip: This is additional coverage offered on top of U-Haul’s free roadside assistance. Benefits include lock-out service, lost keys, jump-starts and more. Safestor and Safestor Mobile: This storage-focused package covers loss or damage to your stored goods from fire, hurricane, tornado, wind and other disasters.
